Onimusha: Way of the Sword – The Samurai Legend Returns

Onimusha: Way of the Sword – The Samurai Legend Returns

After years away from the spotlight, the Onimusha series is finally returning with a brand-new adventure. Onimusha: Way of the Sword brings Capcom's classic action franchise back with modern visuals, intense sword combat, supernatural enemies, and a dark fantasy atmosphere. At the center of the story is one of Japan's most famous historical figures, Miyamoto Musashi.

The game takes players to Kyoto during the Edo period. This is not the peaceful historical city players might expect, however. Kyoto has been consumed by a mysterious force known as Malice, while supernatural creatures called the Genma spread throughout the city.

Players take control of Miyamoto Musashi, a young and determined samurai who carries the mystical Oni Gauntlet. Originally arriving in Kyoto to prove that he is the greatest swordsman, Musashi soon finds himself caught in a much larger conflict involving the Genma and supernatural forces.

Musashi's appearance is inspired by the legendary Japanese actor Toshiro Mifune, giving the protagonist a distinctive visual identity that connects the game to the classic samurai cinema that inspired much of the genre.

Combat is at the heart of Onimusha: Way of the Sword. Rather than simply attacking enemies repeatedly, players must pay close attention to enemy movements and timing. The iconic “Issen” mechanic returns, rewarding players who strike at precisely the right moment.

This makes combat especially intense when facing multiple enemies at once. Players need to manage their surroundings, react quickly, and choose the right attacks depending on the enemy they are facing.

The Oni Gauntlet adds another layer to the combat system. The mystical artifact allows Musashi to absorb souls from defeated Genma and use supernatural abilities. This creates a unique combination of traditional samurai swordplay and dark supernatural powers.

The world itself is another major part of the experience. Historical Kyoto has been transformed by the Genma invasion, turning familiar streets, temples, and buildings into dangerous battlefields. Exploration will reveal hidden mysteries as well as new enemies and challenges.

Visually, Capcom combines modern game technology with the atmosphere of classic samurai cinema. Heavy sword strikes, dramatic camera angles, brutal encounters, and supernatural effects give the game a distinct identity.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword is designed not only for longtime fans of the franchise but also for newcomers. The game preserves the series' recognizable elements while introducing a modern action experience that can appeal to players who enjoy fast-paced Japanese action games.

The wait is almost over. Onimusha: Way of the Sword launches on September 3, 2026, for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. The PC version is available for pre-order on Steam, while a demo and benchmark are also available.

Players who pre-order the game can receive exclusive bonuses. The standard pre-order bonus includes the Lion Dog Charm and Sealed Curse sword appearance. Charms can strengthen Musashi's abilities, while sword appearances are purely cosmetic.

The Deluxe and Premium Deluxe Editions include additional charms, sword appearances, and cosmetic content. The Deluxe Edition includes the Oni Lady, Little Dancer, and Mentor charms, along with Bamboo & Panda and Whittled Oar sword appearances.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword could become one of the most interesting samurai action games of 2026. Its combination of historical Japan, dark fantasy, supernatural creatures, fast swordplay, and Miyamoto Musashi gives the game a distinctive identity.

For longtime fans who have been waiting for a new mainline Onimusha game, September 3 represents an important date. Capcom is bringing the franchise into the modern era while retaining many of the elements that made the original games memorable.

If you enjoy samurai stories, intense sword combat, supernatural enemies, Japanese history, and dark fantasy, Onimusha: Way of the Sword is certainly a game worth watching.
