SILENT HILL: Townfall – The Dark Truth Behind the Fog

SILENT HILL: Townfall – The Dark Truth Behind the Fog

The SILENT HILL series has long been recognized as one of the defining names in psychological horror. Rather than relying solely on traditional jump scares, the franchise has built its identity around atmosphere, symbolism, disturbing environments and stories that encourage players to question what is real.

SILENT HILL: Townfall takes this philosophy in a new direction. Developed by Scottish studio Screen Burn Interactive and co-published by KONAMI and Annapurna Interactive, Townfall moves the series into a remote Scottish setting and presents its entire experience from a first-person perspective.

The game was officially released on September 24, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Steam and the Epic Games Store. It is the first full-length SILENT HILL title to be presented entirely from a first-person viewpoint.

Welcome to St. Amelia

Instead of returning to the familiar town of Silent Hill, Townfall takes players to St. Amelia, a remote island off the coast of Scotland.

Simon Ordell washes ashore on the island and discovers a settlement covered in thick fog and surrounded by an unsettling silence. The town appears abandoned, but the traces of the people who once lived there suggest that something far more disturbing has happened.

Simon has returned to St. Amelia with the goal of “putting things right,” but exactly what that means becomes one of the game's central mysteries.

As he explores the island, fragments of the past begin to surface. Simon's connection to St. Amelia and its inhabitants gradually becomes clearer, while the boundaries between reality and fiction begin to blur.

One of the important characters is Zoe, a nurse from a local family clinic who calls out to Simon and asks him to return to the island. The fact that Simon does not recognize Zoe adds another layer of mystery to the story.

The First Fully First-Person SILENT HILL

The most obvious change in Townfall is its perspective.

For the first time in a full-length SILENT HILL game, the entire experience is presented from a first-person viewpoint. This is more than a visual change. It fundamentally affects how players perceive danger and explore the environment.

The restricted field of view makes it difficult to see everything around Simon. Thick fog and darkness can hide threats just outside the player's vision, making sound and environmental clues much more important.

The developers have specifically emphasized the importance of audio because the first-person perspective naturally limits what players can see. In some situations, players may hear something approaching before they can actually identify the source.

This creates a form of horror based not only on what the player sees, but also on what they cannot see.

CRTV: A New Take on the Classic Radio

The classic SILENT HILL radio has always been one of the franchise's most recognizable gameplay elements. Townfall introduces a different device with a similar atmospheric purpose: the CRTV.

The CRTV is a portable television carried by Simon. It can be tuned to unstable analog signals scattered throughout St. Amelia.

These signals are not simply visual effects. They can contain fragments of the story, clues and information connected to the game's puzzles. Players can use the CRTV to investigate their surroundings and uncover pieces of the island's history.

The device is also integrated into the game's physical interaction systems. On PlayStation 5, players can use the DualSense motion controls to fine-tune the CRTV and search for weak signals.

This makes the device feel like a physical object rather than a conventional menu or scanning mechanic.

Narrative-Driven Puzzles

Puzzles are another major part of the Townfall experience.

Rather than separating puzzles from the narrative, Screen Burn Interactive designed them to be directly connected to the story. Solving a puzzle is therefore not simply a way to unlock the next area. The solution itself can reveal something about Simon, St. Amelia or the people who once lived there.

Players need to examine their surroundings, interpret CRTV signals and connect fragments of information to understand what happened.

This approach makes exploration an important part of storytelling. Instead of receiving the entire narrative through traditional cutscenes, players gradually reconstruct the story themselves.

Exploration, Evasion and Combat

SILENT HILL: Townfall is not simply a puzzle-focused horror game.

As Simon explores St. Amelia, he encounters hostile creatures and other threats. The game revolves around a combination of exploration, evasion and survival, with combat playing an important but carefully balanced role.

Some enemies can be confronted, while other situations are better handled by staying hidden or escaping. Limited weapons and tools also prevent every encounter from becoming a straightforward fight.

The first-person perspective makes these encounters particularly intimate. A creature appearing in a narrow corridor or the sound of footsteps somewhere beyond the fog can become threatening before the player even knows exactly what is happening.

A Different Approach to Psychological Horror

Townfall's horror is built around tension and uncertainty rather than relying exclusively on jump scares.

The developers have described an approach focused on gradually building tension, allowing uncertainty to grow and using interactive environments to make the player feel vulnerable.

The fog limits visibility, while the soundscape constantly provides clues about what might be nearby. This creates a situation where players are often forced to make decisions without having complete information.

That uncertainty is one of the characteristics that connects Townfall to the psychological horror tradition of the SILENT HILL franchise.

The Importance of Sound

Sound plays an especially important role because of the first-person perspective.

Players cannot always see what is happening around them. Instead, footsteps, environmental noises, distorted electronic signals and distant sounds can provide clues about nearby threats.

The game's dynamic soundtrack is created by Pilotpriest and reacts to player and enemy actions. According to the official Steam description, the music dynamically builds and releases tension depending on what is happening during exploration and encounters.

For that reason, playing with headphones can make the atmosphere significantly more immersive.

PS5 and DualSense Features

The PlayStation 5 version of SILENT HILL: Townfall makes extensive use of the DualSense controller.

Haptic feedback allows players to feel the impact of weapons, approaching footsteps and other physical effects through the controller.

Adaptive triggers provide resistance when using firearms, while motion controls can be used for CRTV tuning and certain aiming interactions. These features can also be customized through the game's settings.

The result is a horror experience that combines visual atmosphere, sound and tactile feedback.

Multiple Endings

SILENT HILL: Townfall also features multiple endings.

The player's actions throughout the game can influence how the story ultimately concludes. This gives players additional reasons to explore the game again and interpret its events from different perspectives.

For a psychological horror game, multiple endings also reinforce one of the genre's central themes: there may not always be a single interpretation of what happened.

Standard and Deluxe Editions

SILENT HILL: Townfall launched with Standard and Deluxe Editions.

The Standard Edition's early purchase/pre-order bonuses include the CRTV Style: Rusted cosmetic and the PlayStation 5-exclusive CRTV Style: Beach Edition.

The Deluxe Edition additionally includes Simon's Outfit: Alternate, a digital artbook and a digital soundtrack. Digital Deluxe pre-orders also included 48-hour early access.

Release Date and Platforms

SILENT HILL: Townfall officially launched on September 24, 2026.

The game is available on:

  • PlayStation 5
  • PC
  • Steam
  • Epic Games Store

KONAMI's official product page confirms September 24, 2026 as the release date. Steam may display September 23 in some regional listings because of release timing, but KONAMI's official launch announcement identifies September 24 as the game's release date.

Why SILENT HILL: Townfall Stands Out

Townfall does not abandon the identity of the SILENT HILL franchise. Instead, it approaches that identity through a different perspective.

A remote Scottish island, the year 1996, thick fog, analog technology, mysterious CRTV signals, narrative-driven puzzles, limited resources, stealth, combat and multiple endings all contribute to the game's psychological horror structure. KONAMI describes Townfall as a full-length, self-contained psychological horror experience.

The first-person perspective is perhaps the most important difference. By putting the player directly behind Simon's eyes, Townfall creates a closer relationship between exploration and fear.
